Something Really Important!

A couple of nights ago we’re all sitting at the dinner table when sweet little Rachel says “Oh, hey guys… I have something to say, it’s actually really important!” with a hint of her Ukrainian accent coming through. She had our attention and continued wide-eyed with “I’ve been acting a little strange at school lately.” (She had a big grin on her face and giggled through the whole thing.)

We all looked at each other with confusion and started busting out laughing. If you don’t know Rachel, she is ALWAYS acting a little strange. In fact, I believe that it’s a part of the DNA here at the Madge house. (Yes, I include myself in this)

I wish I had some great story as to why she thought she was being extra strange or why it was something that she viewed as “really important,” but I don’t. She has a hard time explaining things sometimes; so between that, the laughing and the randomness we couldn’t figure out what was going through her head.

However, it has made me think about this question…

“What is really important?”

See, for some reason what Rachel had to say was really important to her. I am completely floored as to why but non-the-less it was, even though it’s not what any of the rest of us sitting at the table would qualify as important.

This may be a really silly example but the greater realization here is profound. That realization is that what is important to me, may very well not be important to you…and vise versa. But does that make what it is that is important to me, or important to you any less important?

The definition of important (according to Websters) is: marked by or indicative of significant worth or consequence : valuable in content or relationship

So I’m asking myself this afternoon, what is it that is really important to me? And I wonder what it is that is really important to you. What is it that we value above other things? Where or with who do we spend our time? When we daydream with God, what are we dreaming about? What injustice angers us and stirs up a desire to take action, set things right?

I could easily spout off generic answers; God, family, friends…but it wouldn’t satisfy the stirring in my soul. Maybe God, family and friends are truly the answers. If so, then why? Does it show in where our time is spent and our lives invested?

Which leads me to what in my opinion is a very important question that all followers of Jesus should be continuously asking:

“God, what is important to you?”

I believe God values the things that are important to us and because they are important to us, they’re important to Him.

It’s because He loves us and we’re important to Him.

Yet I wonder, do we really know the things that are important to God, that He values, that are near and dear to His heart? And if we do, are those things also important to us?
